In the first stage of the Better Work programme, there will be three pilot country projects, currently in the design phase. When Better Work designs a country project it must have the support of the relevant employers’ and workers’ organizations, the national government and international buyers. IFC and ILO will not proceed without this support. This can take time to build, but is the key to success and sustainability.

Projects in the garment sector are planned for:

• Viet Nam

• Jordan

• Lesotho

Implementation depends on support from stakeholders and funding and is likely to start from the end of 2007 to the beginning of 2008.

Additional regional or country projects will be considered for 2008 and beyond according to a set of criteria. Possible sectors for country projects include agribusiness, textile and apparel, light manufacturing, transport, mining, construction and electronics.
